Calcium hydroxide, an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ca(OH)2, is commonly known as slaked lime or slaked lime. It is a white powdery solid that forms two layers after adding water. The upper aqueous solution is called clear lime water, and the lower suspension is called lime milk or lime slurry. The clear lime water in the upper layer can be used to detect carbon dioxide, and the turbid liquid in the lower layer, milk of lime, is a building material. The solubility of calcium hydroxide decreases with increasing temperature. Insoluble in alcohol, soluble in ammonium salts and glycerol, and can react with acids to generate the corresponding calcium salts. At 580ºC, it decomposes into calcium oxide and water.
USE
1. Used in the preparation of bleaching powder, hard water softener, tap water disinfection clarifier and pharmaceuticals in the construction industry.
2. It can be used as an additive in rubber and petroleum industries. It can be used in lubricating oil to prevent coking, sludge deposition, neutralization and anti-corrosion. It can also be used as hard water softener, disinfectant, antacid, etc.
3. Used as analytical reagent, carbon dioxide absorbent, and also used in organic synthesis for making bleaching powder, hard water softener, depilator, disinfectant, antacid, astringent and various calcium salts for testing carbon dioxide and gas absorption.
4. Leather hair removal, insecticide, water treatment.
