Sodium hexametaphosphate is a kind of sodium metaphosphate polymer, also known as "polysodium metaphosphate", "sodium polymetaphosphate", "sodium metaphosphate vitreous body", "Graham salt", and its appearance is colorless transparent glass. It is a solid or white powder with high solubility in water, but the dissolution rate is slow, and the aqueous solution shows an acidic reaction. The complex of divalent metal ions is more stable than the complex of monovalent metal ions and is easily hydrolyzed into orthophosphate in warm water, Chemicalbook acid or alkali solution.
Sodium hexametaphosphate is highly hygroscopic and becomes sticky after absorbing moisture. For certain metal ions (such as calcium, magnesium, etc.), it has the ability to form soluble complexes, so it can be used to soften water. It will also form precipitates with lead, silver and other ions. These precipitates are redissolved in excess sodium hexametaphosphate solution to form complexes. Barium salts can also form complexes with sodium hexametaphosphate.

1. Used as a high-efficiency water softener for power stations, rolling stock boilers, detergent additives, corrosion control or anti-corrosion agents, cement hardening accelerators, streptomycin purifiers, and cleaning agents in the fiber industry and bleaching and dyeing industries.
2. Used medicinally as a sedative.
3. Used in the food industry as preservatives, stabilizers, and juice precipitants.
4. In the petroleum industry, it is used to prevent rust of drilling pipes and control the viscosity of mud during oil drilling.
5. It also has certain uses in departments such as fabric printing and dyeing, tanning, papermaking, color film, soil analysis, radiochemistry and analytical chemistry.
my country's GB2760-1996 stipulates that sodium hexametaphosphate is a permitted food additive (moisture retaining agent) and can be used in cans, juice drinks, dairy products, and soy products; it is also used as a dye dispersant and water treatment agent.
