Copper chloride (Cupric chloride), inorganic compound, chemical formula CuCl2. Copper chloride is a covalent compound, planar chain. It absorbs moisture easily from the air and becomes the blue-green rhemical crystal CuCl2·2H2O dihydrate. Copper chloride is yellow brown powder, soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, soluble in ammonia, slightly soluble in acetone and ethyl acetate, slightly soluble in ether. Its aqueous solution is acidic to litmus.
Copper chloride exists in nature as hydrochlorite. It is usually made by the reaction of copper carbonate and hydrochloric acid. Commonly used as catalyst for organic and inorganic reactions, mordant, insecticide, petroleum deodorization, desulfurization and refining.
