Barium sulfate, also known as barite, has the chemical formula BaSO4 and is a colorless or white orthorhombic crystal.
Type I barium sulfate: white loose fine powder, odorless and tasteless. Type II barium sulfate: It is refined from the sulfate mineral barite group barium sulfate. Calculated as a dry product, the barium sulfate content should not be less than 97%. It is a white loose fine powder, odorless and tasteless. Barium sulfate (type I and type II) is insoluble in water, organic solvents, acids or sodium hydroxide, and contains 58.84% barium.
Barium compounds have a wide range of uses:
1. Barium sulfate can be used as raw material and filler in rubber, plastics, pigments, coatings, papermaking, textiles, oils, inks, and welding rods;
2. Used as raw material for barium-based grease, oil refining, beet sugar production, and rayon;
3. Used as pesticides, sterilants, rodenticides, explosives, green fireworks, signal flares, tracer bombs, indicators for medical X-ray imaging, etc.;
4. Also used in glass, ceramics, leather, electronics, building materials, metallurgy and other sectors.
Barium metal can be used as a getter and adhesive for televisions and vacuum tubes. Barium alloys with aluminum, magnesium, lead, silver and other metals are used to make bearings.
